Thats exactly what I thought!!! This reaks of those half-assed 'Agnostics'. It should read something like. THERS IS NOT GOD YOU SIMPLETONS!!! That would be much funnier.

I guess I'm sort of confused here.
So athiests are the ones who want clean vehicles? Is it because as athiests, we arent convinced that Jeebus is going to come down and take all the good people away so we are the only ones worried about the environment?
Im really just confused as to the context of that little dig.

I guess that would depend on the definition of "useful." Lighthouses are useful ALL NIGHT LONG every day, so indeed, the utility factor for lighthouses would probably exceed that of a church.

Critical of organized religion yes. Atheist, not at all. Franklin, was a believer in God and a supporter of various churches. He wasn't a fan of dogma, but that's not the same thing.

Unless he was just pulling my chain in his autobiography.

Nice google quote though, dickless.

Huh? It's not a fantasy draft, I don't really care what he believed. I'm just saying he's no atheist. There shouldn't be any argument about it. He was a satirical writer that criticized the institution and emphasized the individual. He wrote all sorts of quips on religion, but he was always a man of faith (and science). I have no idea what evidence exists that supports Franklin being an atheist.

He was indeed. After losing his brother in river boat accident he "lost his faith" then after losing his all but one of his 4 children, and his wife and all of his money and his house, he was a full on unapologetic atheist.

I'm sure there is some truth to that, but as far as I knew, and according to my English professor on American Lit., Twain struggled with his beliefs at times, was critical of organized religion but was a believer in God throughout his life.

Maybe I misunderstood him or something.

He struggled with it his whole life. He could not understand why God would do this to him. And after losing his daughter (who drown in his bathtub) a few years before he died, he wrote his only living daughter a letter swearing god off completely.

I'm really not sure you can pin down Twain either way. Dude was complicated. I think he just struggled with the concept of God his whole life. He wrote both ways on the existence of God, especially after going through a lot of hard times.

I've never heard of the deathbed letter renouncing God though. Interesting.

I don't think so, he really tried to understand it. And after so much shit going on in his life he came to his own conclusion that God did not exist maybe because he had severe depression (the clinical kind, not the having a bad day kind) and he had to blame someone other than himself and he did blame himself for every death in his family. You see his atheism after his wife (a devote christian) dies. Almost as if he restrained himself for her.

i think that the big thing about the pic is that someone was trying to extablish credibility for atheism by putting pics of famous historical figures on that, and they were either outright incorrect or disputable. nitpick about one or two of them, but there are some glaring mistakes in that, making the pic more uncredible than credible.

Carl Sagan.

Quote:
Sagan wrote frequently about religion and the relationship between religion and science, expressing his skepticism about many conventional conceptualizations of God. Sagan once stated, for instance, that "The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard, who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by 'God' one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity."

Einstein believed in the god of Spinoza. Change creator or designer to force or natural will. Viewing human's divinity as superfluous and no more divine than any other form of life.

Spelling it Atheist or Deist it all boils down to their rejection of Blind Faith in man. Accepting man's fallibility in their interpretation of the divine.

They Spell GOD... N-A-T-U-R-E

Their fundamental view on faith sets them facing the direction of Atheism with their backs to religion.
